Effexor dosage

Effexor is also known as Venlafaxine. It is used as an antidepressant for treating anxiety disorder which may be generalized or social, dysthaimia, panic disorder, major depressive disorder and also personality disorder. It is used to treat depression by restoring and maintaining the balance of certain natural substances in the brain. This in turn helps to improve the person's mood and prevent psychiatric problems.

It has a unique chemical structure which is entirely different from those of the currently used antidepressants. This can also be used by patients with sleep disorder like narcolepsy, and also for treating and reducing their muscle weakness which is known as cataplexy. It is even prescribed for the treatment of diabetic neuropathy by many doctors. Effexor has the capacity to increase blood pressure. So, before beginning with this medication, the patient's blood pressure should be brought in control and then should be monitored frequently. It also has the tendency to increase eye pressure.

Effexor is being manufactured in the form of capsules as well as tablets. In addition, it is available in different dosages which include capsules of 37.5 mg, 75 mg and 150 mg and tablets of 25 mg, 37.5 mg, 50 mg, 75 mg and 100 mg. Patients of all ages, who are taking this medicine, should be observed and monitored appropriately for any sort of changes in their behavior.

At the beginning, the effexor dosage will be 75 mg per day. Based on your convenience, it can be split into smaller doses of 2 or 3. Doctors may increase the dosage in steps which should not be more than 75 mg per dose and 375 mg per day. However, if you tolerate high dosage, then the doctor may even advise you to increase the dosage by 150 mg. Anyway the dosage should be increased very gradually.

Usually this medicine is taken with food. People who are younger than 24 years of age, should be checked by the doctor regularly especially during the first 12 weeks of the treatment. This is because they may suddenly get suicidal thoughts. If you are having liver or kidney diseases, inform your doctor about the same. This will help your doctor in prescribing a right dosage for you.

Some people use effexor for controlling anxiety and depression. They may be even advised to start with an initial dosage of 37.5 mg for about 4 to 7 days. Then it may be gradually increased to 75 mg. Nevertheless, the maximum dosage must not exceed 225mg a day, when used as a medication for depression. This dosage again, may be adjusted by the doctor if the patient has kidney or liver diseases.

A dosage higher than the prescribed one is an over dosage. In some cases, the patient may start observing some changes in his own behavior or may notices some symptoms like anxiety, trouble in sleeping, fatigue, nausea, sweating headache, dry mouth, weakness, dizziness, insomnia, constipation, nervousness and loss of appetite.

At this juncture, immediate medical aid must be taken, since this could have been caused due to over dosage of Effexor also. There is a chance that you miss the dosage. In that case, the dose can be taken as soon as you remember. On the other hand, if it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule of dose. Otherwise, it may lead to over dosage and cause some adverse effects as stated earlier.

If the dose is less than 37.5 or between 37.5 and 75mg during the transition, then the pill may be used as partial dosing. It is done by opening the capsule and sprinkling it on any soft food. Sprinkled granules remain slow release unless bitten into. However, an effective dosage for one individual may not be effective for the other person. Therefore, it is highly recommended to consult a doctor and follow the prescribed dosage!
